Scott to be Real

15thApr. × ’09

Scott is from our IT department and he’s the definitive nice guy. Always friendly, always helpful, and when you engage him in conversation, he’ll genuinely listen and not just nod along to the rhythm of your words. Scott is also gay. It’s almost as if the two sterotypes of being gay and in IT, balance each other out, resulting in an anti-stereotype.
Not too neat, not too camp – just right.

He’s also great at supplying me with pirated movies. He’d stopped by my desk to drop off a freshly burned DVD and we were chatting about what was on the disc, when Steve, from Sales, slid over and just stood next to us. The creepy way he insuated his presence, pretty much ended our conversation and the roar of awkwardness consumed my ears. Some people hate uneasy silences. For Steve, they’re like a summer breeze.

He just stood there, peacefully rocking back and forth with his hands in his pockets. Then he abruptly turned to Scott, mustering all of his usual poise, and eloquently busted out with
If you were blindfolded and two guys farted in front of you, could you tell if one of them was a gay?

To his credit, Scott cheekily came back in an instant with
No, but I could tell you which one has aids

Steve’s reply was
Ah, so you can tell which one is gay

There is no emoticon for what I’m feeling.
